| Caption | Salmon Nets on the Shore, Joan Eardley (1921-1963), 1961 Eardley painted Catterline’s often ferocious seascapes in the winter, working outside even in stormy weather, strapping herself to her easel. As a queer woman, she probably found Catterline more welcoming than the socially conservative Glasgow artworld. This painting captures the local fishing industry which would soon be replaced by fish farms. The single blue brushstroke, which could be the moon, was Eric Linklater’s suggestion to replace a piece of newsprint collage. The Linklaters visited Eardley in her studio and probably bought this painting from her directly.
