Caption"Probably a copy from a series of portraits of Scottish monarchs painted Jacob de Witt or de Wet (1640-97) for Holyrood House. De Witt's paintings were themselves based on a series of paintings by George Jamesone. This is one of a large number of images of the Stuart dynasty in general in the university collection. These images attest to Stuart Royal patronage of King's College and later to the prolonged Jacobite sympathies of both King's and Marischal Colleges. James IV was King's College's original patron and established the institution in 1495."
