"The Reverend John Alexander Forsyth, LLD, born on 28th December 1768 at Belhelvie, and the son of the minister there was a man of many interests and achievements. He patented a percussion lock for fire arms, which was adopted 30 years later by the British army. He held the charge at Belhelvie himself between 1790 and 1843. He is credited with establishing a savings bank and introducing smallpox vaccination into NE Scotland. The percussion lock involved him in producing detonating powder for his experiments. These scales with brass pans and a set of brass weights all contained in a wooden box were used to weigh the ingredients used to make the detonating powder."
