ActivityAlfred Edward Borthwick was the son of William H. Borthwick of Crookston, born in 1871. He studied art in Edinburgh and Paris from 1890 to 1896, after which he enlisted in the ranks and helped to raise the Scottish Sharpshooters, 70th company of the XVIII battalion of the Imperial Yeomanry. He served in the Boer and First World Wars, retiring from the army in 1919 as honorary Staff Captain. He returned to art and became a member of Royal Academy, specialising in portraits and subjects of religious genre. He was president of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolours from 1931 to 1949. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1928, and a fellow in 1938. In 1952 he was awarded an honorary LLD by St. Andrews University. He married a daughter of James T. Pringle of Torwoodlee and Ann Parminter Pringle, nee Black, and died in 1955.
