EpithetGenealogist and advocate
ActivityJames Maidment was born in London around 1795 and called to the Scottish Bar in 1817, where he specialised in cases requiring some antiquarian research. This was his particular interest, and though he was an accomplished lawyer he found time to edit and write for several antiquarian societies in Edinburgh. He was friends with several eminent scholars and writers of his day, including Sir Walter Scott and C.K. Sharpe. He died in 1879, and the sale of his considerable library lasted fifteen days.
