ActivityMarc-Andre (Sebastian) Raffalovich was born in Paris of Russian parents. His father was a banker and he was the youngest in a family of three. He was educated in Paris and at Oxford University, before settling in London. He was acquainted with numerous well-known people and entertained regularly. He was close boyhood friends with Reverend John Gray, parish priest of St. Peter's, Morningside, Edinburgh, and subsequently moved to Edinburgh. He was a fervent supporter of the Roman Catholic Church and excercised his philanthropy, for example, in erecting a church at Pendleton, near Manchester, and the Chapel of the Abbey at Downside. He worked as a journalist for some time and in later life wrote poetry.
