Activity | Before 1792, there was no bridge in Montrose and the river was crossed by ferry, but an Act was passed that year to build one. The original bridge was part wood and part stone and was supported by piles driven into the river bed. However, these were eroded by strong tides and a more substantial iron suspension bridge was built under an Act of 1825 (6 George VI cap cxxvi). This bridge also suffered from the effects of the strong tides and the current bridge was built in 1931. |
