Caption "A copy made c.1785 from a work in the possession of Professor John Stuart. Stuart, an antiquarian and historian was Professor of Greek at Marischal College from 1782. One of a large number of images of the Stuart dynasty in general in the university collection. These images attest to Stuart Royal patronage of King's College and later to the prolonged Jacobite sympathies of both King's and Marischal Colleges. The desire of Marischal to own a painting of Mary in 1785 in which she is presented as both Queen and Catholic martyr, testifies to continuing, if sometimes covert, sympathies."
