Author: Inglis,Jim & Curtis,Neil Date: 1990 Purpose: Encyclopaedia of the North-East

"To care for destitute people during the 18th and 19th centuries 'puirhooses' were set up, often by a parish or burgh, in which these people were cared for. Mitchell's Hospital, a single storey, H-plan building in The Chanonry, Old Aberdeen was built in 1801, 'a refuge for the deserving poor' and established 'to clothe and maintain five widows and five unmarried daughters of the Merchant and Trade Burgesses of Old Aberdeen'. These are two horn beakers bound with silver rims, which were used to issue drinks to the inmates. The rim would help to preserve the edge of the cup when in heavy use. Both are inscribed on the outer rim: 'Mitchell's Hospital Old Aberdeen 1801 No.1 or No.2', the date of the establishment of Mitchell's Hospital."
