Brief Description | Papier-mâché model of a Garden Snail made by Auzoux & Company. Body can be taken apart from the shell down to the middle section of the foot, to show the muscles, vessels, nerves and organs inside (16 seperate removeable components). Small rectangular paper labels are present on some of the organs/ muscles to indicate how to dismantle it, the label have a number and hand to indicate the piece that can be detached, and all other parts are numbered with small circular labels. Additional labels giving English translation of organs are also present and probably attached at the university after purchase. Components were made in moulds with a type of papier-mâché and then reinforced with wire. Arteries, veins and nerves made with wire covered with hemp and paper, then painted and glued into place. Membranes present made of Goldbeater skin with a coating of sturgeon glue applied to protect the object. |
Inscription Content | Anatomie Clastique 1869 catalogue entry reads (translated from French): 'No. 56 Snail - (Helix pomatia, Lin.) spiral - like type of mollusc, considerably enlarged, 33c. wide (1 foot) by 66c. long (2 feet), with muscles, vessels, nerves, viscera, decomposing into as many fragments as there are organs, and offering more than 600 objects of detail, showing all the parts contained in the tentacle'.
