| Object History Note | Carbolic spray used as an antiseptic in the operating theatre by Sir Alexander Ogston (professor of surgery 1882-1909). Ogston (1844-1929) had a private laboratory behind his house at 252 Union Street, Aberdeen and it was there, in 1880, that he identified and worked on the staphylococcus organism against which the carbolic spray was so effective. |
