Caption | "The painting was commissioned from Giles by Marischal College in 1861. The Tudor Gothic buildings of Marischal College seen here were designed by Archibald Simpson and build between 1837 and 1844. The obelisk was a memorial to Sir James McGrigor, Rector of Marischal (see ABDUA: 30104). It was designed by Giles and is now situated in Duthie Park, Aberdeen. 'Fusion' between Marischal and King's College took place in 1860. The recording of Marischal in this way may relate to a desire to retain the identity of the formerly independent institution. Giles (1801-1870) a native of Aberdeen, trained in London and Paris and travelled in Italy. Returned to Aberdeen in 1826. Founder of Aberdeen Artists Society. Usually a painter of Classical and Scottish landscapes, he also painted and exhibited portraits including several of Archibald Simpson."
