Caption "Decorated bowl from grave at Craig, Auchindoir (c3500 - 2500BC)."

Author: Inglis,Jim & Curtis,Neil Date: 1990 Purpose: Encyclopaedia of the North-East

"One type of later Neolithic pottery is known as Clacton-Rinyo or grooved ware. It was first identified at Rinyo, Orkney, but is found throughout Britain, and dates from about 2000-1800BC. The pottery is thick and the vessel has a round base. This bowl is decorated around the rim with broad incised lines in a typical pattern of sinuous triangles in-filled with incised hatching drawn in opposing directions, giving the impression of basketry. The rim is hatched, but the base of the vessel is plain except for a few randomly incised lines. This bowl was found at Den of Craig, Auchindoir, Aberdeenshire at the beginning of the 20th century."
