Person NameYarrow Kirk
ActivityThe earliest references to Yarrow Kirk are the visit of Edmund de Luthum and Edward I on their return from the Battle of Falkirk, 1292 and the investiture of Sir William Wallace as the Guardian of the Kingdom of Scotland, 1298. Since then the church has had several names and its parish has shrunk as other parishes have been formed. St Mary’s of the Forest Church first appears in the records from the 13th century and the building survived until 1640 when it was replaced by the present kirk which was built at a more easily accessible location at Whitehope, on the property of the Buccleuch family. In 1922 the building was damaged by fire, leaving only the walls standing, but it was restored by 1923 and continues to serve the local community.
