ActivityThe Selkirk Mechanics' Institute, Library and Reading Room were established in 1853, and was still active in 1881. The library held 1500 volumes. There was an annual subscription of 4 shillings. The library was open on Wednesdays 8-9 pm and Saturdays 7.30 pm to 9 pm, and the Reading Room was open daily 10 am to 10 pm. In 1866 the President was Sir John Murray of Philiphaugh; the Vice-President was Robert Paton WS; The Secretary was Alex Scott the teacher; the treasurer was John Dunn the chemist; and the librarian was James Cockburn.
