ActivityThe Selkirk Gas Company was founded in 1835 and supplied gas for domestic heating, lighting and cooking. In 1905 gas consumption was 33 million cubic feet and by 1935 it was 60 million, with over 2,000 consumers and over 200 street lamps. The town council first tried to purchase the Gas company in 1908 but it was voted against. In 1949 a pipeline was laid from Galashiels and in 1953 the production of gas ceased and supplies came from the national grid. In 1972 the Mill Street gas holders were demolished and Selkirk was supplied with North Sea gas.
