JurisdictionBerwickshire County Council
Person NameBerwickshire County Council; Public Assistance
ActivityThe Local Government (Scotland) Act 1929 (19 & 20 Geo. V, c.25) abolished parish councils, which had previously administered poor relief. Town councils of large burghs became the local authorities for the administration of the poor law in their area; in the landward areas the function passed to the county council and was often delegated to district councils. Perth appointed a Public Assistance Committee of the town council and public assistance officers. The public assistance function of local authorities was largely abolished in 1948 with the introduction of a welfare system operated by central government (National Insurance Act 1946, 9 & 10 Geo. VI, c.67; National Assistance Act 1948, 11 & 12 Geo. VI, c.29). ]
