ActivityJames Byers was born in 1733 and trained as an architect. He spent some forty years of his life in Rome, collecting antiquities on behalf of rich patrons, and lecturing on antiquities and archaeology: at one point he was in possession of the famous Portland Vase. In 1785 he was made an honorary fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. In 1790 he retired to Aberdeenshire. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and died in 1817.
