He studied at St. Andrews and Oxford Universities, but also pursued linguistic studies in his spare time, specialising in Northern European languages. Though he held at various times the chairs of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford and of English at Chicago, his principal work was on dictionaries: he worked on the Oxford English Dictionary and the New English Dictionary, edited the Dictionary of American English and began work on the Dictionary of the Older Scottish Tongue, on which he worked until 1954: the dictionary was finally finished in 2002. He died in 1957.
