ActivityThe seventh son of Thomas Trotter of Ballindean, merchant burgess of Edinburgh, William Trotter was active on Edinburgh’s council and served as Lord Provost between 1823 and 1827. He was known as an improver. He married St. Clair Stuart Knox, the daughter of a London physician, and later served as Justice of the Peace, Deputy Lieutenant and Commissioner of Supply for Perthshire, where Ballindean is situated. He died in 1833 and was succeeded by his second son, Robert Knox Trotter, an army captain.
