ActivityAlexander Frederick Falconer was educated at Glasgow, St. Andrews and Magdalen College, Oxford. He was appointed as lecturer at St. Andrews from 1935 to the outbreak of the Second World War, in which he served as Lieutenant Commander in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve to the end of the war. On his return to St. Andrews he was promoted to Senior Lecturer, and became Professor in 1955. He was a trustee of the National Library of Scotland, and published works on Percy and on Shakespeare and the sea. He retired in 1978, and died in 1987.
