ActivityCharles Abbot was born in 1757, the son of the Rev. John Abbot, DD, rector of All Saints’, Colchester. He trained as a barrister. In 1796 he married Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Philip Gibbes of Barbados. Entering politics, he was appointed in 1801 chief secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. The following year he was appointed Speaker of the House of Commons. He retired 1816 and was elevated to the peerage as 1st. Baron Colchester in 1817. He lived in Sussex and died in 1829, to be succeeded by his son as 2nd. Baron.
