ActivityGeorge Macdonald was born in Elgin in 1862, and educated at Edinburgh University and at Balliol College, Oxford. He was master of Kelvinside Academy, Glasgow, from 1887 to 1892, then became a lecturer at Glasgow University. In 1904 he was appointed Assistant Secretary to the Scottish Education Department, and progressed to become Secretary in 1922. He held the post until his retirement in 1928. He was created KCB in 1927. Prominent in numismatical circles, he published works on coins and on Roman Britain. He died in 1940.
