ActivityJames Augustus Henry Murray was born near Hawick, Roxburghshire, in 1837. He graduated BA from the University of London and MA from Balliol College, Oxford, then returned to Hawick to teach. He taught in Hawick and London from 1855 to 1885, and from 1878 to 1909 he served for several periods as president of the Philological Society in London. He was on the staff of the New English Dictionary and because of it moved from London to Oxford in 1885. He published various works on philology and Scottish history, and died in 1915.
