ActivityEdmund Gosse was born in London in 1849, the son of P.H. Gosse, FRS, the eminent zoologist. He was educated privately, but was later awarded an honorary MA from Trinity College, Cambridge, an honorary LLD from St. Andrews University in 1899, an honorary D.Litt. from Cambridge University, and various overseas degrees. He was assistant librarian at the British Museum from 1867 to 1875, then translator to the Board of Trade to 1904. In 1884 he was appointed Clark Lecturer in English Literature at Trinity College, Cambridge, a post he held until 1890. He published widely in verse and prose, his subjects including literary criticism and biography. From 1904 to 1914 he was librarian to the House of Lords. He was made CB in 1912, and created knight in 1925, and served as a trustee of the National Portrait Gallery. He died in 1928.
