ActivitySamuel Smiles was born in Haddington in 1812 and studied medicine at Edinburgh University. After practising in Scotland he moved to Leeds, where a post editing the Leeds Times encouraged him to try his hand at biography. He was chiefly interested in industrial scientists and wrote about Thomas Edward, George Stephenson and Robert Dick, using their example to encourage others to succeed in the same ways. He died in 1906.
