ActivityWilliam Kirk Dickson was born in Edinburgh in 1860 and graduated MA from Edinburgh University in 1880. He was admitted an advocate in 1887 and, with an interest in antiquities, became librarian of the Advocates’ Library in 1906. This library formed the core of the National Library of Scotland, of which he was the first librarian from 1925 to 1931. He served as secretary to the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland from 1905 to 1908 and was Rhind Lecturer to the Society in 1914. After a period as Chairman of the Edinburgh Centre of the Franco-Scottish Society in the 1930s he was awarded the Legion d’Honneur in 1939. He published several works on historical or biographical subjects, and died in 1949.
