ActivityBasil Chisholm Skinner was born in Edinburgh in 1923 and was educated at Edinburgh Academy and Edinburgh University. He served in the Intelligence Corps during the Second World War. He married Lydia Mary Mackinnon and after the war became librarian at Glasgow School of Art. In 1954 he moved back to Edinburgh to become Assistant Keeper of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. He joined Edinburgh University as a lecturer in 1966. He was active in the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, the National Trust for Scotland, the National Museums of Scotland and other related organisations. In later years he lived in Duddingston. He died between 1996 and 2000.
