EpithetMP, Governor of Dominica
ActivityAndrew James Cochrane was a son of the 8th. Earl of Dundonald, and was born in 1767. He married Lady Georgiana Johnstone and added her name to his. He became an army officer, and in 1797, already a colonel, he was appointed Governor of St. Dominica, where he soon acquired a reputation for cruelty and corruption. He was court-martialled and forced to resign from the army but returned to the West Indies, continuing his practices, and also, on his return to Britain as an MP he carried out a stock exchange fraud. He implicated his nephew, the naval officer Lord Thomas Cochrane, and, having ruined him and been convicted himself, fled to the continent, where he is believed to have died.
