ActivityJohn Spencer Muirhead was born in 1889 and educated at Fettes, Edinburgh, and at Oriel College, Oxford, whence he graduated BA in 1912. Returning to Scotland, he studied law at Glasgow University and graduated LLB in 1919, becoming a solicitor. During the First World War he served in the Signals (he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order and the Military Cross), but during the Second World War he moved to the Artillery: in peace time he was much involved with the Officer Training Corps. He retired with the rank of Brigadier. He was Deputy Lieutenant of Stirlingshire from 1936, and Vice-Lieutenant from 1960 to 1964. Knighted in 1953, he was also awarded the Territorial Decoration. He died in 1972.
