ActivityJames Grant was born in Edinburgh in 1822. He trained as an architect’s draughtsman, but became a writer. He wrote fifty-six novels as well as military histories of Scotland and a history of Edinburgh: having served in the Army in the early 1840s he was a keen supporter of the Volunteer movement in Edinburgh. He founded, in 1852, the National Association for the Vindication of Scottish Rights, which, though short-lived, established some of the bases of the Scottish Nationalist movement. He died in 1887.
