ActivityJoseph Anderson was born in Arbroath in 1832. He began his career as a teacher and taught in Arbroath and later Constantinople. Returning to Scotland, he became editor of the ‘John o’Groat Journal’ in Wick, a post he held from 1860 to 1869. He had already developed an interest in Scottish antiquities, and held the position of Rhind Lecturer in Archaeology to the Society of Antiquaries in Scotland. From 1869 to 1891 he was Keeper of the Scottish National Museum of Antiquities in Edinburgh. He edited the Orkneyinga Saga in 1873 and lectured on early Scottish Christian history. He died in Edinburgh in 1916.
