ActivityGeorge Douglas Brown was born in Ochiltrie, Ayrshire, in 1869, into some poverty. He was fortunate in being encouraged to apply for a scholarship to Glasgow University, but his studies were interrupted by family circumstances and he graduated with a poor degree. He was determined to write, and after one or two false starts The House with Green Shutters was published in 1901. It was successful, but Brown was already ill, and affected by stress. He died the following year in London.
