ActivityGeorge Combe was born in 1788 and educated at the High School and University, Edinburgh. He became a Writer to the Signet in 1812, at about which time he began to study phrenology, reading the works of Franz Josef Gall and Johann Kaspar Spurzheim. His brother, Dr. Andrew Combe, was equally enthusiastic on the subject, and from 1837 he gave up his law practice and travelled extensively in Europe and America promulgating educational and prison reform based on the practice of phrenology. He died in 1858. His wife, Cecilia, survived him by about ten years.
