EpithetMinister, Secession / United Presbyterian Church, Selkirk
ActivityGeorge Lawson was born around 1786, the son of George Lawson, DD (Marischal College, Aberdeen), second minister of Selkirk United Presbyterian Church. His grandfather, Andrew Moir, had been the first minister. George Lawson was minister of Portland Road United Secession Church, Kilmarnock, but at his father’s death in 1820 he was called twice to Selkirk. He refused both times, and the congregation instead accepted his brother Andrew as minister. When Andrew died in 1836, George Lawson finally accepted the charge, and remained there until his death in 1849. He was succeeded by his nephew John, son of his brother Andrew. The church’s ministry was thus in the hands of the same family for over a century.
