ActivityHenry Craik was born in Glasgow in 1846, the son of the Reverend James Craik, DD, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. He was educated at Glasgow University and Balliol College, Oxford, whence he graduated MA Hons in Classics and History in 1869. He became an examiner, then Secretary to the Scotch Education Department in Whitehall from 1885 to 1904. Elected Conservative MP for Glasgow and Aberdeen Universities in 1906, he went on to represent the Scottish Universities from 1918. In the same year he became a member of the Privy Council. He was created KCB in 1897 and baronet in 1926, and was awarded honorary degrees by both Glasgow and St. Andrews Universities. He published on several subjects, including Dean Swift, India, Scottish history, and Edward, 1st. Earl of Clarendon. He died in 1927.
