ActivitySamuel Rutherford Crockett was born in Kirkcudbrightshire in 1859 and was educated at Edinburgh University. He tutored for some years, then returned to Edinburgh to study at New College, becoming a Free Church minister at Penicuik in 1886. However, he gave up his ministry in 1894 and devoted his time to writing, both novels and short stories, which he used to condemn poor social conditions, religious hypocrisy and injustice in working conditions. His work is of the ‘kailyard’ tradition, though he also wrote some historical novels and tried his hand at both detective and science fiction. He died while travelling in France for his health in 1914.
