His brother Charles, later Lord Tinwald, was a Senator of the College of Justice, as was his son James, later Lord Barjarg. Lord Barjarg's daughter Isabella married Colonel Patrick Tytler, son of William Tytler of Woodhouselee. Isabella's daughter, Jean Tytler, married her cousin James Erskine of Aberdona in the early 1800s. John Erskine of Cambus was an advocate in the late 1700s. He married a lady called Christian, and his daughter, Charlotte, married Robert Paul of the Commercial Bank of Scotland in 1814. By 1878 the family had become Erskine Murray.
