ActivityThe Society of Antiquaries of Scotland was founded by David Erskine Stewart, 11th. Earl of Buchan. Its function was two-fold: the first part was to seek out, preserve and publish old texts related to the antiquities of Scotland, and the second was to preserve the antiquities themselves. Its Proceedings were first published in 1854 and the series continues today as the foremost Scottish archaeological journal. The museum built up by the Society now forms part of the National Museums of Scotland.
