ActivityThomas Smyth, was appointed Apothecary to King James III (1452-1488) of Scotland. His descendent Patrick Smyth (b 1627) purchased the lands of Methven in 1644 having sold his estate in Orkney. He was succeeded by his eldest surviving son David Smyth of Methven (1683-1732) who was succeeded by his eldest son David (1711-1764). David Smythe of Methven Castle (1746-1806) later became Lord Methven. He was Sheriff of Perth from 1786-1793 and was succeeded in the estate by his son, Robert Smythe of Methven (1778-1847), Justice of the Peace and Deputy Lieutenant. He died in 1847 and was succeeded by his brother William Smythe (1803-1892). Lieutenant-Colonel David Murray Smythe of Methven Castle (b 1850) succeeded his father in 1892. He was Justice of the Peace and Lieutenant-Colonel of the 3rd Battalion Royal Highlanders.
