ActivityJohn Pitcairn Mackintosh (1929-1978), member of parliament, was born on 24 August 1929. He was educated at Melville College, Edinburgh, and at the universities of Edinburgh, Oxford and Princeton. In 1967 he obtained a DLitt from the University of Edinburgh. He was lecturer at Glasgow University, Edinburgh University, Univeristy of Ibadan, Nigeria, University of Strathclyde and at Birkbeck College, London. He was elected Labour member of parliament for Berwich and East Lothian, 1966-1974. From 1974-1977 he was Professor and Head of Department of Politics at Edinburgh University. From 1977 he was a freelance writer and television commentator. He married, first in 1957, Janette M. Robertson and secondly, in 1963, Catherine Margaret Una MacLean He died on 30 July 1978.
