ActivityIan Campbell Dunn (1943-1998), gay rights campaigner, was born on 1 May 1943 in Glasgow. He attended Hillhead High School. Dunn's activism originated in 1967 when the Sexual Offence Act which repealed anti-homosexual laws was passed but was not valid in Scotland. Therefore he began to contact other gay rights campaigners and in 1969 established the Scottish Minorities Group in Glasgow. In 1978 this group became the Scottish Homosexual Rights Group and, subsequently, Outright Scotland. In 1971 he helped to found the 'SMG News', which later became 'Gay Scotland' and at a conference in 1974 he was involved in the establishment of the International Lesbian and Gay Association. In 1974 he was also involved in the establishment of the Edinburgh Gay and Lesbian Community Centre. From 1977 Dunn was involved in the Edinburgh Books Collective, which started a shop called 'First of May', which sold alternative left wing political and lifestyle books. He was an active humanist minister and celebrated ceremonies for the affirmation of lesbian and gay couples. He died on 10 Marcy 1998 in Edinburgh.
