ActivityThe Cadell family of Grange, Linlithgowshire, and Banton, Stirlingshire, are descended from the Cawdor, Calder or Caddell family of that ilk, Nairnshire. Hugo de Cadella , Thane of Calder obtained a grant of the lands of Calder in Nairnshire from Malcolm III (c 1010-1040). James John Cadell (1779-1853) succeeded to Banton, county Stirling, in 1855 upon the death of his elder brother, William Archibald of Banton (1775-1855), advocate, traveller, savant and mathematician. Henry of Grange (d 1888), the second son of James John Cadell succeeded to the estate of Banton in 1872. He purchased the estate of Avoncrook and died in 1888. His eldest son James John Cadell (1843-1900), was Justice of the Peace in Linlithgow and Captain of the 8th Volunteer Battalion Royal Scots. He died without issue on 20 March 1900.
