Activity | The Wauchope of Niddrie family descends from a family setterld in Wauchopedale, Dumfriesshrie. The family obtained the lands of Niddrie Marischal from the Keith family, Earls Marischal. Gilbert Wauchope had a charter of Niddrie from Robert III (1316-1390). Gilbert Wauchope of Niddrie (d 1551) was Deputy to Earl Marischal from 1527-1540. Archibald Wauchope was attainted as a Roman Catholic and in 1609 an Act of Restitution of the House of Niddrie was passed and his son Francis inherited the estate. His son and heir John (fl 1633-1653), was knighted by Charles I (1600-1649) in 1633. Andrew Wauchope (fl 1656-1725) died wihtout surviving sons and was succeeded by his cousin Andrew Wauchope in 1725. His grandson William Wauchope (d 1825) was Aide-de-Camp to Sir Thomas Maitland, Governor of Ceylon. Major-General Andrew Gilbert Wauchope (1846-1899) was Justice of the Peace and Deputy Lieutenant. He served with the Royal Highlanders (Black Watch) and was killed in action at Modder River, South Africa, on 11 December 1899. |
