ActivityJames Logie Robertson (1846-1922), ['Hugh Haliburton'] poet, was born on 18 September 1846 at Milnathort, Kinross. From 1849 he was a pupil-teacher in Haddington and subsequently attended the University of Edinburgh. He taught at various schools in Edinburgh including Edinburgh Ladies College and retired in 1913. He married Janet Simpson (1860-1932), the daughter of Peter Simpson, a solicitor from Edinburgh, and they had two sons and three daughters. He published country idylls in 'The Scotsman' and in 1882 published his first poetry under the name 'Hugh Haliburton' entitled 'Horace in Homespun: A series of Scottish Pastorals'. In addition to further editions, he also wrote essays concerning Scottish history and literature under that pseudonym. He died on 13 June 1922.
