ActivityJames Miller (1893-1987), artist, was born in Glasgow on 25 October 1893 the son of William Miller, warehouseman and Margaret Miller, his wife. From the age of fourteen he attended free Saturday morning art classes at Glasgow Art School. After leaving school he worked for a period at a solicitor's office in Glasgow, copying deeds and running errands, but left to enrol at Glasgow Art School where his fees were paid by the Buchanan Bequest of the Incorporation of Coopers of Glasgow. He became teacher of art at Hillhead High School, Glasgow. He was a member of the Glasgow Art Club from 1931. During the inter-war period he travelled Europe painting and was appointed an official war artist during the Second World War. In 1934 he became a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour. In 1943 he was made an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy and in 1964 a full Academician. He died at home on 4 March 1987.
