ActivityReverend Sir George Adam Smith (1856-1942), theologian, was born in 1856, the son of George Smith and Janet Colquhoun Smith nee Adam. He lived with his aunts Mary Smith and Hannay Anderson at Fillyside Cottage, Leith, for a period including 1865-1869. He obtained a travelling scholarship and visited Germany, Egypt, Palestine and Syria. From 1881-1908 he was minister to the Queen's Cross Free Church, Aberdeen. In 1889 he married Lilian Buchanan (1866-1949). In 1916 he was appointed Moderator of the United Free Church General Assembly and also received a knighthood. From 1910-1935 he was Principal of Aberdeen University. In 1933 he was appointed chaplain to King George V and in 1934 he became a Doctor of Divinity at Cambridge University. He died on 3 March 1942.
