ActivityDr Catherine Snodgrass (1902-1974) was born on 17 July 1902 at Hopefield Farm, Cockpen, Midlothian. Her father was Peter Lennox Snodgrass (d 1939) and her mother was Annie Scott (nee) McHarrie. She was educated at Eskbank Girl's School, Midlothian, and St George's School for Girls, Edinburgh. From 1920-1924 she studied at the University of Edinburgh and graduated with an MA in Mathematics and Natural Philosophy. From 1924-1925 she attended St George's Training College for Teachers and from 1925-1926 worked as a teacher in Edinburgh. From 1926 she continued her studies in geography and in 1931 obtained a Ph.D. From 1936 she worked in the Department of Geography, University of Edinburgh and was appointed lecturer in 1945. In 1956 she resigned from the Department of Geography and took up an assistant lectureship in the Department of Natural Philosophy. She retired in 1962. From c 1964 she was editor of the Scottish National Geographical Magazine and she died on 13 December 1974.
