ActivitySir George Campbell of Edenwood (1778-1854), surgeon in the Bengal Medical Service, 1799-1820 was the elder brother of John, Baron Campbell, Lord Chancellor. He was knighted in 1833 following his involvement in the suppression of the Fife reform riots. He died at Edenwood on 20 March 1854. Sir George Campbell of Edenwood (1824-1892), Indian administrator and author, was the eldest son of Sir George Campbell of Edenwood (1778-1854), near Cupar, Fife. He was educated at Edinburgh New Academy, Madras College, St Andrews and St Andrews University. In September 1842 he travelled to India where he held a succession of administrative posts before poor health caused him to return to Europe in 1851. In 1853 he married Laetitia Vibart. In 1854 he was called to the English bar and was appointed associate of the court of queen's bench. In 1854 he returned to India. In 1855 he was appointed commissioner for customs in Northern India. In 1868 his health forced another return to England. He returned to India as Lieutenant-Governor of Bengal in 1871. He was knighted in 1873. From 1875-1892 he was Member of Parliament for Kirkcaldy. He died in Cairo from influenza on 18 February 1892.
