ActivityJohn Guthrie (d 1986), author and composer, was born in New Zealand. In 1921 he went to Edinburgh to study medicine. In 1936 he married Vivian Duncan. He became friends with Sydney Goodsir-Smith (1915-1975), poet and critic, Sorley MacLean (1911-1996), Hugh Macdiarmid (1892-1978), Ronald Stevenson (b 1928), and Denis Peploe, painter. He composed songs, many to the words of Sydney Goodsir-Smith. Following the Second World War, in which he served as Squadron Doctor, he studied music. Subsequently he became Chief Medical Officer for an oil company in Kuwait. In 1962 he retired and moved to Ballapais in Cyprus. He died on 29 October 1986.
